What happened
WHO published the Emergency Committee statement on 25 August after reviewing wild poliovirus type 1 and circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses. It reported four wild-type 1 cases with onset in 2026 at the time assessed—three in Afghanistan and one in Pakistan—alongside continuing vaccine-derived outbreaks, cross-border spread, and gaps in routine immunization and campaign quality.

Why it matters
A PHEIC is a legal and coordination designation under the International Health Regulations; it is not a claim that every country faces equal immediate risk. The committee’s distinction between a continuing international emergency and no pandemic emergency matters because the amended IHR introduced the latter as a higher alert level. The response remains centered on surveillance, vaccination quality, access, and cross-border coordination.
