What the evidence says

The multicenter trial fed 459 adults one of three dietary patterns for eight weeks after a run-in: control, a fruit-and-vegetable pattern, or the combination pattern now called DASH. Body weight and sodium were held relatively stable so the comparison isolated dietary composition. The combination pattern lowered systolic and diastolic pressure, with larger reductions among participants with hypertension.

How to use the finding

The study supports treating an overall food pattern as a blood-pressure intervention, not searching for a single nutrient. In ordinary life, people choose, buy, prepare, and share food, so affordability, culture, cooking, and sustained adherence become central. DASH can be adapted rather than copied rigidly, while sodium reduction and medicine decisions are addressed separately.

Limits and open questions

Eight weeks cannot establish long-term cardiovascular events or lifelong adherence, and a supplied-feeding study may overestimate what an unsupported recommendation achieves. The trial population and food system also limit generalization. Its strength is experimental control; its limitation is distance from daily life. Later evidence should be used to understand durability and clinical outcomes.
